In honor of the long weekend, we’ve chosen a collection of films that are about letting loose and going wild. Unfortunately, we can’t quite go out and enjoy these kinds of adventures ourselves yet, but isn’t it better to watch from the comfort of your home with an all-you-can smoke and snack feast? Not for your family movie night, these films are chock full of nudity, obscene language, and violence. These movies are perfect to watch with a joint in your hand, bong in your lap, or edible in your tummy. To help you set the stage, we’ll recommend a method of consumption that matches the tone of each film so that you can have a complete and immersive cinematic experience 😎 Enjoy this week’s selection, from most to least recent:
The Hangover (2009) by Director Todd Phillips
This is the perfect long weekend movie, especially for those of us who have been missing vegas lately. It follows a group of friends on a one-night bachelor party in Las Vegas, or more specifically the day after the party when they realize they’ve lost the groom and have to retrace their steps to find him in time for his wedding. This movie could be used as promotional content for the phrase “know your limit, play within it,” as we witness these characters follow the trail of shitcrumbs left behind from their night of drunken debauchery. However, in terms of film-making, this messy adventure is perfectly orchestrated. The cast absolutely nails the idiotic interactions between this group of pals and everyone they encounter, including a cameo from Mike Tyson himself.
This movie is going to make you very happy that you chose smoking over drinking this weekend, but in order to honor the film we recommend making a THC-infused ‘mocktail’ using a THC tincture. Dress it up Vegas-style with a fancy cup and garnish, maybe a little fruit on the rim (bonus munchies for later).
Superbad (2007) by Director Greg Mottola
This movie is an undeniable classic. We follow the adventures of social outcasts Seth (Jonah Hill), Evan (Michael Cera), and Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) as they attempt to win their way into a graduation party with booze and babes, which proves to be a challenge. It’s really not the plot that keeps us coming back though, the best part of this film is the hilariously sincere delivery of an excellent script. The crude, adolescent dialogue between Seth and Evan feels completely authentic and provides viewers with countless quotable lines.
So what would pair perfectly with this timeless classic? Another timeless classic that’ll take you back to the good ol’ days when you couldn’t yet afford a fancy rig so you grabbed what you had on hand; an apple pipe. If you’re feeling really crazy, try a banana, or any other fruit!
Dude, Where’s My Car (2000) by Director Danny Leiner
Okay so I’ll admit, this film has been absolutely obliterated in the reviews, but it’s one of those movies that’s so stupid, it’s hilarious. It follows the adventure of two stoners (played by Ashton Kutcher and Sean William Scott) who try to find their lost car by getting as high as they were when they lost it and then retracing the steps of their wild night. It’s a beautiful collection of comedy tropes and ridiculous skits that can only be properly appreciated while high, making it the perfect film to enjoy on your long weekend movie night. Make sure you’ve got munchies on hand, sit back, relax, and feel free to talk through this one.
For the perfect pairing we recommend you pull out the quirkiest pipe you own to honor the weed-smoking dog and his dog-shaped pipe featured in this film.
This movie is one of the Coen brothers’ greatest masterpieces. It follows the adventure of a laid-back stoner who goes by ‘the Dude’ and his not-too-bright companions who wind up getting dragged into a complicated mess of kidnapping, cash, and chaos. This movie takes us on a wild and dangerous ride but keeps you laughing the entire time thanks to a brilliantly written script. The dialogue between Jeff Bridges (the Dude), John Goodman (Walter), and Steve Buscemi (Danny) feels so natural that many have asked if the whole thing was done in improv (it wasn’t). This is a must-watch for all marijuana enthusiasts.
In honor of the Dude, we recommend good old-fashioned joints (pre-rolls if you don’t feel like rolling your own) and maybe some incense if you’ve got it on hand. This movie is not about excessive drug use or hard-core partying, it’s about a laid-back ‘Dude’ who just wants to smoke a jay and relax.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) by Director Terry Gilliam
This movie is about excessive drug use. This drug-induced, conspiracy-riddled hallucination of a film was ridiculed by critics but adored by viewers and after you’ve seen it you’ll understand why. Somehow, despite the warped perspective, inconsistent storyline, and borderline traumatic content, this film manages to tell a story. What exactly is that story? Don’t do hard drugs. Journalist Raoul Duke (played by Johnny Depp) and his lawyer, Dr.Gonzo (played by Benicio Del Toro), embark on a mission to find the “American Dream” in Las Vegas armed with a suitcase full of drugs and not much else. If you enjoyed Johnny Depp’s performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, you’re gonna love this. Actually, I would not be surprised if this film is what inspired casting directors to choose Depp for the role of Jack after witnessing such a seamless performance of intoxication. Prepare yourself for a wild ride.
This movie is truly best enjoyed while high. The method we recommend here is edibles, which can be purchased in the form of chocolate, baked goods, or candy. Edibles will provide the perfect slow-burn experience so you can gradually become higher and higher alongside the characters. Once the movie starts to get really crazy, feel free to pull out your rig and enjoy a few dabs if you wanna amp up the experience.
Clerks (1994) by Director Kevin Smith
This movie is essentially a collection of skits featuring two slack-off best friends who work next door to each other and spend the day doing all that they can to avoid work. Over the course of the day, they have run-ins with various customers, girlfriends, ex-girlfriends, and two memorable loiterers named Jay and Silent Bob who go on to appear in 8 more films. If you’ve ever worked customer service, you may enjoy living vicariously through Dante and Randal as they display zero effort to please their customers. This is both a cinematic classic and a stoner must-watch.
Imagine you’re a 19-year-old shithead who hates their job and doesn’t yet know what they want to do with their life. What do they smoke out of? You guessed it, they smoke out of the biggest bong they can get their hands-on, and so should you.
